My writing coach is fond of telling me that the memoir will be what it wants to be. It’s amazing to have a plot worked out and then to see details coming out in the writing that move the story line in a more nuanced direction. I am seeing a current of movement that shows the roots of my addictive personality and why I turned to substances for relief from the chaotic trauma of my home life as a teenager. As I let go and let the words flow, my subconscious is able to come forward and assert itself to tell the real story of my heart’s journey. All I have to do is get myself out of the way. Sometimes that’s harder than it sounds, but sometimes, it’s magic.
